TV Tuesday: ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’

What the *&$% is this show?

This is the first thought you have when you watch Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It is a show starring a box of french fries (or chips for the more civilised), a milkshake and a meatball. Read the sentence again, it is not a mistake. Next, try to explain some of the stories to people. There is a giant spider in a diaper (one of my favourite recurring characters – AKA MC Pee Pants); 8-bit Mooninites who think the Moon is just awesome; a cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future; Emory and Oglethorpe are two Plutonians (one of which has a German accent); Travis is an alien blob who uses a tentacle to pierce someones skull so he can speak in a Japanese accent; or Paul – a giant tentacled monster (although do not call him this) who destroys everything he touches because he is angry about his divorce. Seriously, what is this show?

Yet…it all works out and it is really, absurdly, surrealist fun. I have not laughed so hard before with some of the episodes I have seen. I am not sure if I can pick out a favourite either because most of them are really funny. It is not a show for everyone of course, but if you have a warped sense of humour you will probably enjoy it.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force was first introduced in December 2000 as a part of Cartoon Networks Adult Swim, which is mainly cartoons for adults (Space Ghost Coast to Coast was another favourite). It has since become Comedy Central’s longest running show (even releasing a movie Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters), although it was unfortunately canceled in August 2015 despite strong ratings and cult status amongst fans.

There is no overarching story in this show but you do get the occasional call-back to previous episodes with some recurring characters. Continuity though does not really matter because their home gets destroyed numerous times and people are regularly killed only to return in later episodes without any explanation. This does not matter because the show is not serious, it is there to entertain you with its warped sense of humour and absurd ideas, which is what makes it so damn funny.

FINAL VERDICT

You just need to go watch this show to understand what it is I am talking about here, because having read what I just typed does not make sense. This is basically what the show is about, random stories with random characters doing some weird things which makes for some hilarious television. Sadly, the show was canceled in 2015, but get the DVDs for your collection because most of these episodes will make you laugh again and again. It is silly, absurd, surreal fun. Watch it.
