US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has died at the age of 79. Scalia was a passionate conservative judge who believed the US Constitution should be interpreted as it was written, he often wrote scathingly brilliant descenting opinions. This leaves a vacancy on the Court which allows President Obama to appoint a new liberal judge, which would shift the ideological balance of the Court for decades. However, his appointment must be approved by a conservative Republican Senate. Since Obama only has 10 months remaining in his term, some have argued for waiting until the next President is elected to fill the seat. It is highly unlikely Obama will wait, which would place the burden on the Senate. Politics aside, I will miss the colourful and intelligent opinions of Justice Scalia.
