As the BBC reports, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says the sex industry should be decriminalised. For once, I can agree with him on something. In New Zealand sex workers are a legal business – with taxes and legal obligations like any other. I do not partake in ladies of the night myself but having it regulated and giving sex workers legal rights will make their lives better. Just think of the taxes alone! Gov’ment loves ‘dem some ducats, right? More importantly, sex workers are required to maintain health and safety standards. Not sure how consumer rights and fair trading would apply, but it would still be a legal obligation. Prostitution is the oldest business in the world, formalising it in law does not mean you condone it. Rather, it would keep it in the open and under scruitiny as any other business.
